The Islamic Society of Kingston held a virtual vigil for the Afzaal family last night. Many other communities across Canada held marches and vigils to remember the one year anniversary of the tragic event when a truck jumped a curb in London Ontario, killing 4 members of the family who were out for a Sunday walk. Rahman added City Hall was lit up purple and green last night. Purple was Yumna Afzaal’s favourite colour and green has been adopted to stand against Islamophobia
Over 3 million dollars from the federal government has been allocated to assist local businesses with digitization.
MP Mark Gerretsen made the announcement yesterday at the Kingston Economic Development Corporation. Gerretsen says”These businesses in downtown Kingston who have only ever served off the street can now establish commerce solutions to sell products throughout the world.”
There are two streams within the program, the first stream of funding will help medium and small businesses improve their e-commerce, social media advertising and the creation of customer databases. The second stream involves digital assessments, a chance to apply for zero interest loans and work placements for youth.
The Kingston Syracuse Pathway Cross Border Conference on Health Innovation is happening today at The Holiday Inn. The conference covers health care, and life sciences with a focus on how systems can adapt after the COVID-19 pandemic. Representatives from Queens, The SUNY Centre in Syracuse, along with both Mayor Bryan Patterson and Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh will speak at the event. The conference will close with a pitch competition where five life sciences companies will compete for a $5000 prize, as facilitated by Queen’s Innovation Centre.
Quick note on the roads, The intersection of Portsmouth and Mohawk closed until 1 today for sewer construction, also Portsmouth at Glengarry will be closed 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 7 to complete construction of a sewer.
