Internationally renowned muralist and graphic artist Peru Dyer Jalea will begin constructing his mural Kingston: A Moment in the City today. The public art installation is a partnership between The City of Kingston and HighPoint Developments.The mural will be installed at a new residential building at 168 Division Street, which is at the intersection of Division and Princess Street. The City of Kingston supported the artist selection and commissioning process, while Highpoint Developments is funding the project and will own and maintain the mural once installed.
Jalea says he was surprised that his mural was chosen, he explains “My approach is always abstract which is not always what the community wants because it takes a certain kind of sensitivity to grasp the energy of the design.”
He says the design is rooted in his almost 30 years of doing graffiti art, the design is a text abstraction of the word “Kingston.”
He says he hopes it sparks a little joy, love and pride for the natural heritage that make up Kingston. The mural is scheduled for completion by Friday. Catch the full conversation with Peru Dyer on Citizen K tomorrow afternoon at 5.
Kingston’s Dawn House transitional shelter for women received a $12,785 donation on Thursday, with the funds being raised through the first annual Brothers in Arms Charity Ride well surpassing Brothers In Arms goal to raise 8 thousand dollars. Dawn House is preparing to open a building on Ridley Drive with 12 additional transitional housing units set to open in November.
Executive Director Maggie McLaren says they don’t have the capital funding to develop the west wing of the building into apartments at this time and that it will act as a specialized transitional space during the winter. She adds many of the women who come through Dawn House rely on supports like ODSP and senior’s pensions, which provide barely enough to rent an apartment. With added space, Dawn House will be able to provide more diverse service, and better be able to assist women in whatever different ways they need. The Brothers in Arms Veteran Motorcycle Club say the ride will definitely happen again next year and expect it to take place in late August.
