A brand new community park and plans for a trail system are coming to Cataraqui West. The City of Kingston is hosting an interactive virtual meeting this evening to showcase potential designs and invites residents to share feedback. Neal Unsworth, Manager of Parks and Shoreline says, “This is the largest brand-new park in Kingston in more than two decades.”
The new park is 14 acres and is expected to include fields, courts, playground equipment, a splash pad with connections to future nature trails. The meeting is tonight at 6 over zoom, a link to register is on the Get Involved Kingston Website. Residents can also drop in to INVISTA Centre tomorrow afternoon between 4 and 6 to view project plans and provide feedback.
Murney the police horse will return to the streets of Kingston within the next four weeks. Executive Director of The Downtown Kingston BIA, Marijo Cuerrier says, “In the police world they consider one mounted police officer the equivalent of ten officers…horses tend to help people feel more comfortable with police officers.”
The BIA, along with Kingston Police and The City Of Kingston are fundraising to ensure Murney can continue to be present in the community. They are looking to raise 32 thousand dollars by the end of 2022.. During the winter, Murney was on hiatus recovering from a medical incident. Murney is currently in training with the newly mounted officer Constable Amy Carter.
The annual Paved Paradise public art installation is now up, inviting residents to see Springer Market Square from a new perspective. This year’s exhibit is titled Liminal Square showcasing the work of local artists Bree Rappaport and Lee Stewart. The installation uses colour and mixed media, overlaid and collaged on archival photos. Liminal Square was chosen out of 16 submissions by a Jury of local artists and curators.
