It’s Friday October 14th. Good Morning I’m Karim Mosna with your daily news brief. In the news…
With homecoming approaching, the university district safety initiative goes into effect today and will run until November 1st. Bylaw Enforcement and Kingston Police are reminding post-secondary school community members living in or visiting Kingston to stay safe, respect your neighbours, avoid attending and hosting large gatherings as the high-risk behaviours often associated with large gatherings and nuisance activities put Kingston’s emergency services under pressure; every preventable call to Kingston Fire & Rescue and Kingston Police could mean a delayed response for other emergencies in the city and puts additional pressure on local health care services. Monetary Penalties can be issued for nuisance party infractions. Students fined under the UDSI may also face non-academic sanctions through their college or university. Kingston Police are aware of an unsanctioned event that has been planned for the weekend of October 22nd and will work alongside other law enforcement partners to maintain a highly visible presence in the University District
A community support centre providing access to resources for families with children up to the age of 6 or expectant parents is opening tomorrow at 263 Weller Avenue. This project is part of the provincial child welfare redesign, and is a collaborative response between United Way of KFL&A, City of Kingston, and Family and Children’s Services. ‘A Great Start for Families: Kahwà:tsire Ronwatiyenawá:se Centre’, includes Mohawk language meaning ‘we all work together to support each other’ or ‘we are giving support to someone’. “Ruth Noordegraaf, Director of Social Services & Housing at the City of Kingston says, This Centre’s approach creates a ‘one stop shop’ for services, particularly when a family is in crisis, “Ultimately the Centre will reduce barriers for services that can help prevent further crisis or escalation of need.”
Ecole Maple Elementary School’s Advisory Council is hosting a Trustee Candidate discussion Monday night at 6, at 529 St. Martha’s Street in Kingston. This is an opportunity for candidates from King’s Town, Pittsburgh & Frontenac Islands and Countryside, Kingscourt-Rideau & Williamsville to share their views and platform.
The evening will feature pre-selected questions from the community with an opportunity to submit questions from the floor. The successful candidates will hold their seat until 2026 and will shape the policies and procedures that direct the Board of Education.
